Ana didn't see what the big deal was. It was a hamster. If it had been a cat or a dog or something, then she'd understand better, but it was a rodent that bit everybody. And what good times? All the times that the bloody thing squealed when you held it? All the good times that it stunk up the room? All the good times it bit people?
Sam just nodded.

Sawyer just looked at her and walked away. He didn't do anything spectacular. He never did anything spectacular. Nothing he ever did was worth a thank you.

Ana thought that that was worth thanking. He had been so nice to Sam, and made her feel better.

Sawyer got into his car and drove back home. He always acted really cocky and arrogant but he really wasn't. In fact, he had a very low opinion of himself. He never felt good enough.

While we're out, do you want to go to McDonald's or someplace for supper? Ana asked Sam. Sam nodded, Can I get a happy meal? She asked. Sure. Ana said.
